What is Windows.old?

The Windows.old folder is automatically created when you upgrade Windows to a newer version (for example, from Windows 10 to Windows 11). It contains a complete copy of your previous Windows installation, including:

• Your old system files
• Previously installed programs
• Your old user profile and settings

Why Does It Exist?

Microsoft keeps this folder so you can roll back to your previous version of Windows if something goes wrong after an upgrade. The rollback window is typically 10 days after upgrading.

Can You Delete It?

• Your current Windows installation is working fine

How to Delete Windows.old

You cannot simply delete it from File Explorer (it’s protected). Instead:
