What is LOST.DIR?
If you have ever plugged an Android phone or a MicroSD card into your computer, you have almost certainly seen a mysterious folder named LOST.DIR sitting right next to your DCIM photo folder.
Many users assume it is a virus because it is automatically created and contains weirdly named, unopenable files (like 1038493).
Why Does It Exist?
LOST.DIR is actually a system recovery folder created by Android (specifically the Linux kernel underneath it). It is Android’s equivalent to the Windows Recycle Bin, but specifically for corrupted files.
If your phone suddenly loses power while taking a photo, crashes while downloading a file, or if you physically rip the SD card out of the phone while it is reading data, the file gets corrupted. Android automatically scoops up these broken fragments and dumps them into LOST.DIR so they don’t corrupt the rest of your storage drive.
Can You Delete It?
Yes, but you will permanently lose those recovered files.
Deleting the LOST.DIR folder is completely safe and will not harm your Android phone or your SD card. However, if your phone recently crashed and you noticed a bunch of photos went missing from your gallery, those photos are likely sitting inside LOST.DIR waiting to be recovered by a data-recovery tool.
How to Delete It
- Open the Files app on your Android phone (or use File Explorer on your PC).
- Navigate to your internal storage or SD Card.
- Long-press the
LOST.DIRfolder. - Tap the Trash icon.
What Happens If You Delete It?
Any corrupted files inside will be permanently destroyed, freeing up storage space. However, Android will instantly recreate a brand new, empty LOST.DIR folder the very next time you reboot the phone or re-insert the SD card. You cannot stop it from coming back.
